Healing With Nature Dr. Edward Bach was born in England in 1886 and died in his sleep in 1936. He was a well regarded physician, homeopath, bacteriologist and researcher. He was a driven, dedicated, intuitive, and spiritual man. He lived a simple life, was inspired by being in nature, and even made his own furniture for Mount Vernon, the cottage he lived in during the later years of his life. Dr. Bach enjoyed the local townsfolk and noted early on that people’s attitudes, personality and spiritual strength contributed to their wellness and ill health. It may be surprising to know that he suffered with physical illness and mental exhaustion during various stages of his life. Dr. Bach’s medical practice was very successful and he exhibited his generous nature by treating many underprivileged patients at no charge. He was frustrated with orthodox medicine’s approach i.e. treating the only symptoms of an illness rather than looking for a true cause which he knew could be found by focusing on the person’s attitude and emotions to aid in the healing process. He was ever on the path to discover a gentler and less toxic method to promote healing which led him to the plants, flowers, trees and waters found in nature. Modern research now supports his theories and many accept that a person’s state of mind together with a clear spiritual purpose are important keys to maintaining balanced health in mind, body and spirit. When we are stressed, fatigued and feel unable to cope often our mental and physical health weaken. When we feel confident, capable and positive we experience better overall health. Through years of clinical research and with his keen connection to nature, Dr. Bach discovered that the water droplets on the flower petals of the English and Welsh countryside held healing properties. When he took the water from these plants, he himself experienced the emotional affects – positive and negative vibrational energy – of each plant. He developed a series of thirty eight flowers and Rescue Remedy (a com-bination of 5 flowers) which he felt completed his search for a natural cure. He knew these series of flower essences could address all possible aspects of human nature and counteract all negative states of mind which contribute to ill health. Eventually, Dr. Bach closed his lucrative medical practice to offer only his flower essences and found much success in healing with them. Dr. Bach felt that this system was simple enough for all to use and his hope was that someday it could become the “medicine of the future”. By simply identifying one’s mood, emotions, personality traits and sources of stress and by choosing one or several flower essences to address these issues, one could exper-ience calm, peace, and a more cheerful outlook and thus enjoy improved health. Dr. Bach’s philosophy is as appropriate to today’s living as it was in his own time: Health and happiness are a result of being in harmony with our own nature, and doing the work for which we are individually suited. The Bach® Flower Essences are used worldwide by medical and holistic professionals, mental health practitioners, dentists, veterinarians, and individuals, too. They are non-addictive, safely used with all meth-ods of medical treatments and are successfully used with infants, children and seniors, too. There has even been much success using the Bach® Flower Essences on animals and plants as well. His Work Lives On Allopathic medicine has proven its effectiveness in treating emergency situations, eradicating life threatening illness, and is excellent for diagnosis of disease. However, it does not always properly address the true cause and pre-vention of imbalanced health. Thankfully over recent decades there has been enor-mous public interest and increased research in more natural forms of health care and more focus on how to prevent illness in the first place. Nowadays it is common to hear terms like: integrative health care (using medical and natural meth-ods to manage one’s health), natural health, holistic health care, mind/body/spirit medicine. In the last fifteen years, there has been a major increase in dollars spent on natural health care professionals, organic foods, and vitamins, minerals, and herbs, etc. Research in the seventies has proven the connection of the mind to the body and to the spirit. It is common knowledge, now, that what one thinks affects the brain’s function and the release of hormones and neurological activity. This activity, then, triggers muscles, blood vessels, organ functions and even the emo-tional and mental state of an individual which, in turn, affects one’s overall immune system health. Candace Pert, PhD named this process “psycho-neuro-immunology”. Science is catching up with what Dr. Bach in-nately knew, what he strived to prove in his lifetime, and is thankfully fulfilling Dr. Bach’s dream. Just as his theories continue to come to fruition in our current time through the insightful and pro-gressive thinkers of today, so is his dedication to those who cannot afford to use natural healing methods. In another area of this website, you will find further information on the Bay Shore Holistic Health Association, Inc., a not-for-profit organization offering free holistic health care to those severely economically challenged, and on a sliding scale for those who are not. The center is open each Wednesday from 10 AM to 2 PM and the first Tuesday of the month from 6PM to 9 PM. All staff and practitioners volunteer their time and talents in order to give back to the community and to those otherwise underserved partly as an act of gratitude for what we are blessed with in our lives and partly because it IS truly in giving that we receive. You can continue in Dr. Bach’s footsteps by keeping an open mind, paying attention to that inner voice which sounds different than all the rest, and by truly giving of your time, talents and resources. You will be purely surprised and lifted to see marvelous results - in yourself and others! |
